Cervical Screening (Smear)

At our GP surgery, we believe that cervical smear tests (also known as Pap smears) are an essential part of women's health care. A cervical smear test is a quick, simple, and painless procedure that can detect early signs of cervical cancer, allowing for timely treatment and better outcomes.

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the cells of the cervix, the narrow neck of tissue at the bottom of the uterus. It is one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide. However, with regular cervical smear tests, it is possible to detect and treat abnormal cells before they become cancerous.

The National Health Service (NHS) recommends that women aged 25-49 should have a smear test every three years, and women aged 50-64 should have a smear test every five years. Women over the age of 65 are only screened if they have not had a smear test since the age of 50 or have had abnormal results in previous tests.

During the smear test, a small sample of cells is taken from the cervix and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The results are usually available within two weeks. If any abnormal cells are detected, you will be referred for further tests and treatment if necessary.

We understand that some women may feel anxious or uncomfortable about having a smear test. However, we are here to provide you with support and reassurance throughout the process. Our healthcare professionals are highly experienced in performing smear tests and will do everything possible to make you feel comfortable and at ease.
